Standard or accelerated, what is the difference?

Standard fortnightly is the repayment your lender works out for a fortnightly loan. Over a year you pay about the same as you would monthly, just split into 26 smaller payments. The saving is small, because each payment brings the balance down a little sooner.

Accelerated fortnightly is half your monthly repayment, paid every fortnight. There are 26 fortnights in a year, so you end up paying the equivalent of 13 monthly repayments instead of 12. That extra repayment goes straight off the loan, which is why the saving is so much bigger.

Weekly works the same way. Standard weekly is your lender’s weekly amount. Accelerated weekly is a quarter of your monthly repayment, every week.

Lenders do this differently. Some set fortnightly repayments at half the monthly amount, others work them out so you pay the same each year as monthly. Ask your lender which one you are on.

How this is calculated

  • Repayments are principal and interest at the rate you enter, which stays the same for the whole loan.
  • Interest is worked out each repayment period (monthly, fortnightly or weekly). In practice, lenders usually calculate interest daily and charge it monthly, so your real numbers will differ slightly.
  • A year is treated as 12 months, 26 fortnights or 52 weeks.
  • Fees, rate changes, offset accounts and extra repayments are not included.
